Practical gardening guides for growing your own food, building healthy soil, and keeping a thriving garden.
Every guide here is written by Frank Sned, who has spent thirty years growing vegetables, planting trees and teaching community agriculture. No filler, no recycled listicles. Just what works in a real garden, including the things that went wrong on the way to finding out.
Start here
- How to start a garden from scratch — choosing a site, preparing the ground, reading a soil test, and the mistakes that cost beginners their first harvest.
- How to compost at home — the carbon-to-nitrogen balance that decides whether your pile works, and how to rescue one that has stalled.
- How to fix a patchy, thinning lawn — reading the damage pattern, the screwdriver test for compaction, and when to renovate instead of patch.
- Which grass seed actually grows in shade — fine fescue, tall fescue, and why root competition beats light as the real problem.
- What EC really tells you in hydroponics — and why a correct reading can still hide an unbalanced solution.

Who writes this
Frank Sned has gardened for thirty years. He has run community gardeners’ meetings, worked with an environmental NGO on a tree-planting programme that put 20,000 trees in the ground, and was the first person in his community to organise around moringa. He started this site to put practical growing knowledge somewhere people could actually find it.
